Hanumandhika (Durbar Square)


Kathmandu, the caoital city of the Nepal is named after Kantipur (the city of glory) in 732 AD by King Guna Kama Deva. The major tourist attraction in Kathmandu includes:

Hanumandhoka (Durbar Square)
The name Hanumandhoka comes after the image of Hanuman, the monkey god, situated at the gate of the palace. It was installed by king Pratap Malla. The Durbar Square  is the historical seat of Royalty. The Durbar Square with its old temples and palaces, stands as an epitome in the religious and culture life of the people. The kings of Nepal are crowned and their coronations solemnized in this palace. Many interesting things to see in this area are:

  • Temple of Taleju built by king Mahendra Malla in 1549 AD.
  • Gigantic figure of Kal Bhairav, the God of Destruction. 
  • A nine storeyed palace called Basantapur Durbar or Nautalle Durbar, built by king Prithivi Narayan Shah.
  • Coronation Platform (Nasal Chowk) inside the palace
  • The  Hall of Public Audience (Gaddi Baithak) inside the palace
  • The Statue of King Pratap Malla.
  • The Big Bell and Big Drumss outside the palace.
  • The Jaganath Temple.
  • The temple of Panchamukhi Hanuman inside the old palace, which is one of the only two structures in Nepal, the other is in Pashupatinath.
  • The Krishna Mandir, opposite the entrance to the Hanumandhoka Palace.
  • An enormous glided face of Sweta Bhairav, on the right hand corner outside the palace hidden behind a larger wooden lattice screen, which is removed only during the Indra Jatra festival.
  • The temple of Shiva-Parvati, carved in wood and beautiful painting is situated just before entering the countryyard of Hanumandhoka palace.
  • there are also Numismatic Museum and tribhuvan M Museum inside the Hanumandhoka Palace where one can enjoy a visual feast of carvings and mouldings on the nine storey pagoda of the palace as well as a huge collestions of ancient weapons, coins, arts, etc . There one can find personal belongings of king Tribhuvan, used during his reign and lifetime in Tribhuvan Museum. A nominal free is charged to enter the courtyard of Hanumandhoka Palace. Both museum remain closed on tuesdays and other government holidays.
